Family Caregivers Honored in November

In honor of National Family Caregivers Month, Kimbrough Law salutes the millions of family members, neighbors, and friends who provide care and support for their loved ones during times of need. With profound compassion and selflessness, these caregivers sustain American men, women, and children at their most vulnerable moments, and through their devoted acts, they exemplify the best of the American spirit.

“Day in and day out, more than 65 million family caregivers in this country fulfill a vital role,” said Kim Kimbrough, whose Athens and Gainesville-based elder law firm provides support to those caring for elderly loved ones. “As these remarkable individuals put their own lives on hold to tend to their family members, it is our responsibility to ensure they do not have to do it alone. National Family Caregivers Month is a time to thank, support, educate and empower family caregivers.”

In 1994, the National Family Caregivers Association began promoting the celebration of family caregivers during the week of Thanksgiving. President Clinton signed the first presidential proclamation in 1997 and every president since - Democrat and Republican alike - has issued an annual proclamation appreciating family caregivers. As interest grew in family caregiving issues, National Family Caregivers Week became National Family Caregivers Month.

In 2013, about 40 million family caregivers in the United States provided an estimated 37 billion hours of care to an adult with limitations in daily activities, according to Valuing the Invaluable: 2015 Update, a report prepared by the AARP Public Policy Institute. The estimated economic value of caregivers’ unpaid contributions was approximately $470 billion in 2013, up from an estimated $450 billion in 2009. Read the full report.
