The holiday season is a time for family, fun, and meaningful connections across generations. But as many of us know, finding the perfect gift for older adults can be a challenge. When asked what they would like, many simply say, “I already have everything,” leaving us searching for thoughtful and practical options that genuinely bring joy.

In late November, Robin Lacrimosa, Kimbrough Law's, Life Care Coordinator, and Gayla Zoz, the firm's marketing consultant, recorded a video to discuss Robin's list of holiday gift ideas designed specifically for older adults. We aimed for ideas that balance inclusiveness, usability, and heartfelt meaning, emphasizing family connection and ease of use above all.

Read on for the recap.

Personalized Comfort: Memory Blankets

One of our favorite suggestions is the memory blanket—a cozy throw adorned with family photos or memorable moments. This unique gift serves not only as a source of warmth but also as a treasured keepsake that can spark stories and reminiscence. Imagine your loved one wrapped in a “photo album,” surrounded by the faces and memories of those they cherish. For individuals with memory challenges, these blankets become touchstones for conversation, engagement, and emotional comfort.

Simple Technology: Cell Phones and Radios Made Easy

Navigating modern technology can be overwhelming for older adults, especially those with cognitive changes. Robin recommends simplified cell phones like the Raz or Jitterbug, designed with just the essentials: big buttons, basic contacts, and no confusing apps. These phones help older adults stay independent and connected without frustration or the risk of accidental “purchases.” Similarly, the one-touch radio is a wonderful option — just open the lid, and music plays; close it, and it stops. With classic tunes preloaded and no complicated controls, these radios bring music and nostalgia into daily life with ease.

Games and Activities: Engaging, Dignified, and Fun

Engagement and play aren’t just for children! We discussed games like “Shut the Box” — a classic memory and concentration game that’s accessible for adults and fun for the whole family. The appeal of such games is in their simplicity and dignity; they challenge the mind without feeling childish.

Another innovative idea is the “Walker Squawker,” a pair of motion-activated robotic birds that attach to walkers and rollators. These charming little companions ruffle feathers, sing, and become instant conversation starters—making walks more enjoyable and social, especially in community settings.

For those who enjoy nature, a window bird feeder is a delightful option. It brings the outdoors in, encouraging bird watching and even the occasional “bird drama” with squirrels or raccoons!

Fostering Family Connection: Activities for All Ages

The holidays offer special opportunities for intergenerational bonding. Puzzles, photo albums, coloring books, and “fill-in-the-blank saying” games are wonderful ways for grandchildren and grandparents to connect. For example, matching classic sayings or sorting colorful objects (like Legos or buttons) are activities that bridge ages and forms wonderful memories.

Daily Living Enhancers and Lifelong Learning

As vision and memory change, large digital clocks, wall calendars, and dry erase boards help orient older adults and reduce anxiety about schedules or visits. Audiobook subscriptions—often available for free from local libraries—provide stories and engagement even as reading becomes challenging.

Holiday Gift Ideas Given with the Spirit of Inclusion

Above all, we encourage gifts and celebrations that honor each person’s background and preferences. Whether your family marks Christmas, Hanukkah, both, or none, focusing on the shared joy of giving, music, and togetherness makes the season memorable for everyone.
